Its time to put this old gateway to rest, its ran a hard 3 years and the dust is getting thinker ( and i can afford the upgrades).
So help me out, i need a new computer and i need it around $1,200.

Under $600...
It might just be UK prices but I doubt your get something brand new to play games under £300 over here.

600 is not going to be possible for a completely new machine, the lowest you could go would most likely be 1k.

I'll count my money tonight.

If you can upgrade anything, 600 is a cpu & mobo and perhaps ram.
I made a very respectable Athlon64 system a couple years ago with $600, transplanting the hard drives and CD drive from an old family computer. If you can pull some components from the Gateway into this one, you might be able to get close if you don't ask for MatDef's advice :p
It's probably much better and more futureproof if you work towards scrounging up the extra cash for a brand new machine though.

You idiot. I did the same as Elxx did a few years back. Had a budget of $530 to build a gaming PC. Took the hard drive out of my PS2 and used an ancient CRT monitor. Had an AMD Athalon64 6200+ I think it was. Ran BF2 just fine.

How big was the PS2 HD?

Probably anything between 5 and 20 gigs is my guess.

Man you crack me up, a 6200+?:laughing::laughing:
A few years ago you had a processor that amd still hasn't made yet (just getting ready to launch a 6400+).

Why is BIOS Power-Start-Up test not launching?
Sir. Cheesecake

It could be a million different things. Does your system power up at all?

Because you didn't mount the RAM yet...
Sir. Cheesecake
08-04-2007, 03:54 PM
Lol. Yes you have to close the clips on the ram. Might have to push somewhat hard but its what you have to do.

Do you have the right type of RAM?
Sir. MatDef

Did you plug in the heatsink fan? It has a little plug on the mobo where it's supposed to go.
Sir. AlphaWhiskey

Well i almost melted my CPU. I had the fan installed and working long enough to play some games and get XP up to date and such. I called Intel, they're shipping thermal greese since mine doesn't have any (supossibly why it overheated in the first place...). Should have everything up and running in a couple of days.

The stock intel heatsink has a thermal pad already attached to the bottom, why on earth would you need more paste?

I thought it melted so i wiped it down and put it back in, now it overheats in 45seconds.

WTF! It's supposed to melt you dumbass, thats why it's there.
Never build another machine again, I'm amazed you didn't destroy this one already.

the gray goo was supposed to be there and its supposed to melt and make sweet love with the smooth side of your cpu. Without the goo, its like anal sex , not very fun.
